Bridges in the Community

edited by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

In this lesson, students explore the state of infrastructure in the United States. Using bridges as a lens, they are presented with the challenge of developing a decision model for the local department of transportation. In the process of developing their models, they explore properties and attributes of various bridges in the community to ensure their model helps city planners and civil engineers make appropriate choices when it comes to function, design, and cost of a bridge. As part of this lesson, students create scaled models and drawings that represent an actual bridge they have explored. We recommend reading Chapter 3, which is included in this book selection and provides a module overview and summary. A materials list, safety notes, standards, assessment, teacher background information, Internet resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
