The Wind Farm Challenge

edited by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

This lesson’s activity is the Wind Farm Challenge. In this lesson, each student team creates a proposal for a wind farm designed to convince the local community that the wind farm is a desirable addition. In its proposal, each student team considers the ways wind farms might benefit businesses and property owners locally, as well as local economic factors and the wind farm’s potential to produce energy. They also address environmental impacts and propose mitigation plans for potential negative impacts, providing a model of this mitigation plan. We recommend reading Chapter 3, which is included in this book selection and provides a module overview and summary. A materials list, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessment, resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
