This case study provides a summary of an article on vulcanized rubber. Rubber is one of the most commonly used products in the world today. In this lesson, students explore vulcanized rubber and consider how it was discovered and then work together to think about new applications for synthetic rubber to solve real-life problems. Vulcanized rubber was an accidental discovery that has led to a number of new applications and products, including many of the synthetic rubber objects we use in everyday life. This case can be used as a way to integrate engineering into a lesson on physical and chemical changes. A materials list, teacher notes, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessment, resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Authors, Acknowledgments, Introduction, Appendix, Image Credits, and Index.
