Toward More Equitable Learning in Science

by: Christina V. Schwarz, Cynthia Passmore, and Brian J. Reiser

This chapter examines some important questions about equity in the science classroom. It explores how a focus on practices is in line with goals we have to make science accessible, intelligible, and meaningful for all learners. The chapter shares and also describes and illustrates three principles for teachers to consider as they seek to create such opportunities in their science classrooms. The goal is that teachers can experiment with these three principles as they work to create more equitable learning opportunities in science. These principles can help position teachers and students to engage in expansive science learning. A list of materials, teacher background information, standards, assessments, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors, Contributors, Acknowledgments, and Index.
