Reflecting on Instruction to Promote Equity and Alignment to the NGSS

edited by: Okhee Lee, Emily Miller, and Rita Januszyk

Prior to the Next Generation Science Standards, science ideas were removed from practices and crosscutting concepts, which resulted in science learning as a memorization exercise that did not enable students to explain related phenomena. The major shift represented by the NGSS is that all students need to engage in three-dimensional learning to explain phenomena. This is a challenging task, but one that teachers need to embrace to support all students in learning the sophistication of science expected in the NGSS. Teacher background information, standards, assessments, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors, Contributors, Preface, and Index.
