Defining and Using Our Design Challenge Units

edited by: Helen Meyer, Anant R. Kukreti, Debora Liberi, and Julie Steimle

Chapters 1–3 provide background information and introduce the particular engineering design process (EDP) used in the Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Math and Science (CEEMS) program, as well as how the design challenge unit framework connects with current education standards and reforms. This chapter defines the terms you will see in the teachers’ stories and provides details and a useful template for developing design challenge units. The template is explained, along with a discussion of the process by which we asked teachers to complete it and connect it with their instruction. A summary of the key elements is included. A list of materials, teacher background information, references, resources, assessments, and standards are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Preface, About the Editors and Contributors, Appendix, and Index.
