Setting the Stage: Create Hooks to Secure Student Buy-In

edited by: Helen Meyer, Anant R. Kukreti, Debora Liberi, and Julie Steimle

Chapters 4–7 contain sections written by individual secondary math and science teachers (grades 6-12) who focus on different aspects of implementing design challenge units. In this chapter, the teachers’ stories capture the excitement of engaging students with design challenges. As a result, students found that the inclusion of their ideas and input in the design of the unit added relevance to the concepts they were learning. Students learned about designing good questions, working together as a team, intellectual risk-taking, and leadership. The important “takeaways” from the teachers’ stories are included. A list of materials, teacher background information, references, resources, assessments, and standards are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Preface, About the Editors and Contributors, Appendix, and Index.
