Developing 21st-Century Skills With Design Challenge Units

edited by: Helen Meyer, Anant R. Kukreti, Debora Liberi, and Julie Steimle

Chapters 4–7 contain sections written by individual secondary math and science teachers (grades 6-12) who focus on different aspects of implementing design challenge units. In this chapter, the teachers recognize the needs of students and develop instruments to guide the engineering design process (EDP) that are both age appropriate and reflect the needs and interests of middle school students. The ultimate benefits of implementing design challenges effectively with students include having meaningful learning take place, developing problem-solving skills, and equipping them with the communication and collaboration skills that prepare them to participate productively in the 21st century. The important “takeaways” from this chapter are included. A list of materials, teacher background information, references, resources, assessments, and standards are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Preface, About the Editors and Contributors, Appendix, and Index.
