Gliding Into Understanding

by: Patrick Brown

Chapters 6–13 share grades 3–5 model lessons for putting the “explore-before-explain” mind-set into practice. This chapter offers a 5E lesson with Elaborate and Evaluate phases that places students in the role of scientist and asks them to carry out “next-step” investigations. The next-step investigations challenge students to build on what they have learned during explorations and explanations and to apply it to deepen their understanding of important science process and content. The 5E lesson appeals to students’ interests and is directly related to the phenomenon of flight. The activity box included is meant to provide a professional development experience and promote job-embedded learning. Teacher background information, safety notes, standards, and assessments are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Author, Preface, Introduction, References, and Index.
