A Natural Storyline for Learning About Ecosystems

by: Patrick Brown

Chapters 6–13 share grades 3–5 model lessons for putting the “explore-before-explain” mind-set into practice. In this chapter, the third-grade lesson is aimed at developing students’ ideas about living things and Earth’s systems. The lesson is a case in which students’ prior experiences directly relate to standards at different grade levels and allow them to explore phenomena in different disciplines. The activity box included is meant to provide a professional development experience and promote job-embedded learning. Teacher background information, safety notes, standards, and assessments are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Author, Preface, Introduction, References, and Index.
