Eggstreme Sports: Is Football Too Dangerous for Kids?

by: Sami Kahn

In this lesson, suggested for grades 3-5, students learn about brain anatomy to reinforce the idea that the brain is an internal structure that has a specific role in the body’s functioning. They then create and test helmets undergoing impact, using eggs as a model for the brain. Students also watch a video of a new test developed to ensure helmet safety that is based on an increased understanding of concussions. Before beginning the lesson, we recommend reading Units I and IV, which are included in this book selection. A list of materials, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessments, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, About the Author, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
