In this lesson, suggested for grades 3-5, the flight of Apollo 11 serves as a context for learning about forces and motion as students explore rocket launches and parachute landings. They then examine the scientific, economic, political, and philosophical arguments for and against having a space program, culminating in a mock congressional hearing on whether to allocate funding. Students also write opinion letters to members of Congress in support of or against funding for a space program. Before beginning the lesson, we recommend reading Units I and IV, which are included in this book selection. A list of materials, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessments, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, About the Author, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
