The Pitch in the Wave

by: Milton Huling and Jackie Speake Dwyer

This chapter features Physical sciences StEMT lessons. For most concepts, it is impossible to ensure deep understanding with just one lesson, and this concept is a good example of that—waves could take many weeks. For the demonstration lesson, we focused on a portion of the larger concept of pitch. The concept seems simple, but students struggle when the perspective of what is vibrating is changed. The lesson starts off with glass bottles filled with different amounts of water. Remember to assist students with recording the distance above the water to the rim of the glass bottle. A list of materials, teacher background information, standards, safety notes, assessment, and references are included. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments, About The Authors, About Our Approach, Connection to Standards, Conclusion, Appendix A, and Index.
