Connecting STEM Education, NGSS, and New State Standards

by: Rodger W. Bybee

This chapter explores the question, “What are the connections among STEM, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and new state standards?” The question is actually a response to one of several potentially limiting factors for STEM’s long-term, widespread effect on American education. Specifically, a majority of states have new standards and many states also have either implemented or plan to implement assessments based on new state standards. It is essential to understand this point because assessments based on new standards can truly limit the emergence of STEM as a basic component in American education. While state standards may not be the only thing to consider for STEM initiatives, they certainly are one essential factor. Connecting STEM lessons, units, and programs to new state standards is critical. Teacher background information is included in this book selection, as well as the Table of Contents, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Author, References, and Index.
