Due to the centrality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in society, it is now appropriate to couple STEM education with the goal of developing students’ skills related to citizenship. This chapter introduces concepts of citizenship and makes connections to STEM education. When students can engage in experiences that have STEM-related contexts, such as local environmental issues, they have opportunities to learn about citizenship. As students propose solutions to problems and work with peers to understand and justify their positions, STEM teachers can help them realize the rights and responsibilities of our cultural heritage. Teacher background information is included in this book selection, as well as the Table of Contents, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Author, References, and Index.
