What Is the Nature of Science, and What Does It Mean for Conceptual Understanding?

by: Richard Konicek-Moran and Page Keeley

This chapter examines the nature of science and the connection to conceptually understanding science, as well as its importance to anyone teaching for conceptual understanding. The recognition of the importance of developing understanding of the nature of science led to its inclusion in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as a set of eight understandings incorporated into the NGSS practices and crosscutting concepts. In summary, developing conceptual understanding of the nature of science supports the learning of science. Reflection questions are provided at the end of the chapter, as well as suggestions for available NSTA resources. Teacher background information, standards, and assessments are included. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, About the Authors, Introduction, References, and Index.
