Archive: Book Beat Live! Integrating STEM Teaching and Learning into the K-2 Classroom, October 20, 2021

Young children come to school with a natural curiosity, along with a collection of ideas, experiences, and interests, that are tailored to the exploratory nature of STEM. Teachers can leverage these students' assets and foster shared classroom experiences that serve as the foundation for student discovery.

In this web seminar you will meet Dr. JoAnne Vasquez, Michael Comer and Jen Gutierrez, authors of Integrating STEM Teaching and Learning into the K-2 Classroom. This practical guide offers a model for combining the engagement of real-world experiences, student curiosity, and proven research strategies to support the implementation of STEM teaching and learning in the K-2 classroom in support of the vision of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

As they discuss the book and share their experiences, they will walk-through a model template that can help you create your own STEM learning experiences and address:

  • Why STEM in the K-2 classroom. STEM teaching and learning offers an integrated instructional plan that addresses the learning needs of all students in the already busy K-2 classroom.
  • What are the key elements and how do they work together. Using examples from actual K-2 classrooms, they will describe the step-by-step thinking that defines the key elements in the STEM unit and share examples of how those elements can work together.
  • How can STEM support your core literacy instruction With an emphasis on ‘learning to read’ in K-2 classroom, they will describe how STEM teaching and learning can actually help motivate students to become more fluent in ‘reading to learn’.

All individuals receive a certificate of participation and 100 NSTA activity points for attending the live seminar and completing the end-of-program survey. A certificate of participation is not awarded for watching the recorded version of the program.

We invite you to register for upcoming web seminars at NSTA.
