Working With Student Engagement

"Classroom assessment informs teachers how effectively they are teaching and students how effectively they are learning" (Cross 1996). For this purpose, in this chapter the author constructed an assessment tool known as the Diagnostic Learning Log (DLL)—a focused journal entry where students indicate what they have learned from a particular unit. Overall, the DLL is a very beneficial assessment tool and enables the teacher to obtain student feedback throughout the semester. Students also benefit from the DLL as it provides them with an opportunity for reflection where they can begin to critically analyze how their learning is progressing.
