Energetics and Photosynthesis

by: A. Daniel Johnson

The process of photosynthesis is the key to life on Earth. In this unit, students will learn to make an enriched chloroplast preparation from spinach leaves. They will measure relative redox activity by mixing them with DCIP, an indicator dye that changes color when it becomes reduced. Students will also determine whether certain herbicides—chemicals used to kill plants—affect electron transport. After completing these two exercises, students will design and execute an experiment to test a hypothesis of their own.
