Archive: FA24: Catching Up & Charging Ahead: Safely Using Li-Ion Batteries in Our School Classrooms/Laboratories, October 28, 2024

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have an increased presence in our school classrooms and laboratory instructional spaces, including cell phones, tablets, laptops, and equipment. However, Science/STEM teachers nationwide are forced to adopt and make use of new technologies like Li-ion batteries without the resources, training, and supervision to properly prepare our students and staff to purchase, store, charge, maintain, and dispose of these batteries.

Science/STEM Safety experts Drs. Kevin Doyle and Ken Roy will discuss the safety issues of Li-ion batteries and how to properly purchase, store, charge, use, and dispose of them in a safer way.  In addition, the presenters will share their district’s protocols for handling Li-ion battery emergencies.  By the end of the seminar, participants will know about protocols to keep everyone safer, and will have an understanding of the science behind Li-ion batteries and how they can be a benefit when used wisely.

All individuals receive a certificate of participation and 100 NSTA activity points for attending the live seminar and completing the end-of-program survey. A certificate of participation is not awarded for watching the recorded version of the program.

We invite you to register for upcoming web seminars at NSTA.

Below are comments from individuals who attended the seminar:

  • "I enjoyed learning the approaches to handling situations as they arise, and the struggles with national organizations and challenges at even the classroom level regarding safety."
  • "I really enjoyed the safety tips and information they shared. This helped me understand how to properly handle batteries."
  • "Safety should always be #1. Battery safety is not something that I have ever heard shared except for science teachers who may use battery powered equipment. Thank you for sharing!"

A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' account page for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
