Three-dimensional (3D) learning is at the heart of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and today’s science education reform—but what does it really look like in classrooms, and how can leaders support its implementation system wide?
Designed specifically for school and district leaders, this session will provide a clear vision of 3D learning in action and offer tools for identifying and supporting high-quality, three-dimensional instruction.
You will gain insight into what to look for in classroom instruction and instructional materials, how to support teachers in making the shift, and what kinds of system-level structures and professional learning are needed to sustain it.

This session provided a powerful and practical framework for understanding three-dimensional (3D) science learning. The presenters clearly illustrated how the integration of science and engineering practices (SEPs), disciplinary core ideas (DCIs), and crosscutting concepts (CCCs) drives sensemaking and equity in classrooms. The session stood out for its actionable leadership guidance, by highlighting how districts can support teachers in implementing 3D instruction through collaboration, reflection, and ongoing professional learning. The real-world examples and reflection prompts made it easy to envision how 3D learning transforms both teaching and student engagement. Overall, this session was inspiring, well-structured, and essential for instructional leaders guiding NGSS-aligned practice.
