Archive: Learn and Lead: What is 3D Learning? Practical Guidance for Leaders, October 29, 2025

Three-dimensional (3D) learning is at the heart of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and today’s science education reform—but what does it really look like in classrooms, and how can leaders support its implementation system wide?

Designed specifically for school and district leaders, this session will provide a clear vision of 3D learning in action and offer tools for identifying and supporting high-quality, three-dimensional instruction.

You will gain insight into what to look for in classroom instruction and instructional materials, how to support teachers in making the shift, and what kinds of system-level structures and professional learning are needed to sustain it.

Participants will:

  • Understand the key features of 3D learning and its role in student sensemaking
  • See examples of what 3D instruction looks like in real classrooms
  • Learn how to recognize and support 3D learning through observations and feedback
  • Explore strategies for building the conditions for 3D instruction to thrive across a school or district

Who should attend:

  • School and district leaders
  • Instructional coaches
  • Science education decision-makers looking to lead the shift toward meaningful, three-dimensional science teaching and learning

All individuals receive a certificate of participation and 100 NSTA activity points for attending the live seminar and completing the end-of-program survey. A certificate of participation is not awarded for watching the recorded version of the program.

We invite you to register for upcoming web seminars at NSTA.

Below are comments from individuals who attended the seminar:

  • "I enjoyed the personal examples used by the presenters. For instance, when it was said that elementary school students tend to not like science at the middle school level, I appreciated that feedback and I learned what can be done to prevent that from happening."
  • "I found the videos of the classrooms using 3D instruction most helpful. It is difficult to understand what it looks like in action in the classroom until you can see it."
  • "The seminar offered a clear, practical overview of 3D learning as a holistic leadership model. I found the integration of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions especially impactful. Real-world examples showed how this approach fosters inclusive and adaptive teams."

A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' account page for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
