We see, use, and enjoy levers daily—in the operation of pliers, the action of a seesaw, or the beauty of an Alexander Calder mobile. In fact, parts of the human body are levers; think of the knee, elbow, and other joints as fulcrums, and the long bones as levers. In this activity, student groups will expand their understanding of levers and balance by discovering how weight and fulcrum placement affect lever performance. As a connecting activity, the students will apply what they learn about levers to the creation of dynamic science- or mathematics-related mobiles.
