Identification Detectives: Sounds and Smells of Science

by: Thomas O'Brien

This simple, hands-on exploration can be used to emphasize the role of sensory perception as a necessary antecedent to mental conception, the nature of science, and the pedagogical value of a “fun phenomena first.” While most hands-on explorations emphasize the sense of sight, this one depends on sound and touch (or smell). The topic of sound is introduced via a mixer activity involving one to three people in the class.
