The Nature of Science (NOS) includes making scientific inferences
based on available empirical evidence (observation) and logical arguments
(e.g., prediction based on pattern recognition). Making and
learning from “miss-takes” uncovered via skeptical review is an essential
component of both individual learning and tentative, subject-torevision
scientific explanations. Learners are surprised to find that an obvious, logical inference about a partially hidden word pattern proves to be incorrect.
