The integration of science and language arts is an effective way for teachers to enhance students’ comprehension and critical thinking and the requirements of curriculum. Both writing and reading can be readily emphasized during science lessons. This chapter is organized into three distinct sets of activities: Writing Basics—activities designed to help extend your teaching of writing; Poetry in Nature—activities in which students are asked to think creatively about what they see outdoors; and Reading About Nature—activities that have students respond to literature selections. Some alternatives for engaging students’ imagination and weaving together science and language arts activities are also provided.
