This is a great probe to determine if the students know where to measure the “starting” and “ending” point when attempting to measure distance in a motion problem. This probe reveals if the student understands and is able to recognize that any point on a measurement tool can be used to measure distance, rather than reading off whatever number is the end point. This probe could best be used at about the fourth-fifth grade level to give students the opportunity to measure same length or distance from different starting points.
