Mentoring for Professional Renewal: The Kentucky Experience

by: Sharon Brennan

This chapter offers an overall perspective on the value of mentoring for new and experienced teachers. It also identifies characteristics of effective mentoring drawn from reports of existing programs, primarily from a statewide teacher induction program in Kentucky—The Kentucky Teacher Leadership Program. This program emphasizes mentoring and was designed to improve teacher retention and quality and seems to be reinvigorating the veterans who serve as mentors, thus demonstrating the reciprocal value of mentoring for participants at all levels.
