Food Chain Energy

by: Page Keeley

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about the flow of energy in a trophic relationship that children are most familiar with—food chains. The probe is designed to find out if students recognize that most of the energy is concentrated at the beginning of a food chain (i.e., in the producers) and that some energy is lost to the environment each time it is transferred from one organism to another.
