The purpose of this activity is to help students understand that some organisms, such as termites, have instinctive inherited behaviors. These inherited instinctive behaviors, which evolved over time through the process of natural selection, had a positive impact on the reproductive success of the organism in the past (and may continue to have a positive impact on the reproductive success of the organism if environmental conditions do not change). This activity also helps students learn how to engage in practices such as planning and carrying out investigations, arguing from evidence, and communicating information. In addition, this activity is designed to give students an opportunity to learn how to write in science and develop their speaking and listening skills.
