I enjoyed reading this chapter. I think this is an important topic in today’s education that is not spotlighted enough, in my opinion. I found this chapter to be informative, relatable, and applicable. I love using trade books in my teaching! I like having this book as a reference now when I want to explain my reasoning to someone about why I use trade books in subjects such as science, social studies, or mathematics. I think it is also important to point out that this chapter does a good job of stating that it is important to make sure you study the book and check with experts or the author notes before using a trade book for your science lesson. I thought this chapter made valid points about how using trade books to teach science concepts can be beneficial to students and teachers. A few reasons this chapter covers are that trade books are engaging to students, they can help improve reading comprehension skills, and they can provide opportunities for students to ask questions. Many could say that most, if not all, of science is built upon on the foundation of simple inquiry. This is something that children naturally do: ask questions. So why not read a book and let your students dive deep into the world of questions? All they need is something to initiate them: a trade book! I am interested to see if the full book gives some examples of trade books and lessons in which to use them.
