In this lesson, students look at and clarify their understanding of the concept of ethics. In the first activity, students develop a definition for ethics based on their prior knowledge. Then as a class, students explore the meaning of five key ethics principles and apply these principles to a hypothetical situation. Working in their small groups, students discuss and evaluate a dilemma to determine what might be a sound and careful ethical response for the situation. After completing the small-group activity, students discuss and debate their group responses for the situation in a class discussion. Following this discussion, their attention will be focused back to the term ethics to develop a class definition.
