Although the research and content base of this book dates from a decade ago, the overview and the insights into how children best learn science underpin the philosophy of the new NGSS standards, particularly as they point to learning how to encourage students to communicate their understanding of what they think and what they know and how students may mature into analytical thinkers. For those new to education or in pre-service courses, the material contained within lays the foundation for best teaching practices, project-based learning, the 5E’s, and constructivism. As such, this chapter and other contained within the book are heady resources that should be considered when reflecting on classroom practice and on reasoning how to structure lessons. This chapter, written by Rodger W Bybee, features a great explanation on the 5E model, and how it works within an inquiry teaching setting. Table 2 and Table 3 are great as quick and easy references on how to incorporate inquiry into all lesson/unit plans. I highly recommend the entire book, but if time and/or money is limited – at least read this chapter.
