I likes the article very much as it gave examples on how to begin the activity, where the kids first analyze the component of the greeting card and then they try and build their own. The also selected an item which they could relate to their environment and their daily lives which made it even more interesting.

I highly recommend these "Teaching through Trade Books" articles. The connection to the ELA CCSS is right on, and yet, the science is not secondary. The true integration of non-fiction into our science classes is important and can be engaging when paired with hands on activities that help kids learn science.
