I have used an inquiry wheel in teaching before, and as noted by the author, in spite of great effort to teach controls and variables, my students easily become overwhelmed with the language and actions required in working with variables. I like how the template allows and encourages students to consider all of the possible variables within an experiment and yet forces them to focus on only one. I will use this template this year when we focus on variables and during any and all inquiry activities.

This author uses a template of materials in a particular lab for students to identify the controlled variables with a check and circle the manipulated variables. All the steps for this type of activity are presented by the author in an attempt to have students better understand the concept of variables. I think that if a teacher did this all the time, students would be more likely to understand the concept of different types of variables.
