The authors point out that newspapers and news magazines that regularly feature science and technology sections can be used to introduce current events into the classroom. Because scientific discovery changes daily, the fastest way to obtain current information is through local media. Using mass media as a tool to teach with has increased over the last few years. Today, teachers are able to present science from personal and social perspectives that involve the students. The authors suggest reading the “science section” of a local newspaper. By using current news articles, students can then learn how to connect meaning with the “real world”. This article has four figures/charts that; provide forms & definitions, a critical analysis checklist, teaching strategies, and a chart to assess understanding. The information presented in this article provides an excellent bridge between why a teacher should use current events in their classroom and how to implement the process. Designed for middle school classroom, the concept (with modifications to the articles content) can be used by elementary teachers needing a rationale and a suggested way to implement it.
