New teachers may not be experienced enough to maintain control in the classroom. This article is about classroom management and provides a good basic premise that a new teacher should follow. Remember that it is never too late in the year to make changes to take control of your classroom. While these ideas presented in this article are familiar to more experienced teachers, new teachers need help if they don’t have a mentor. I only wish that I had seen this article before I had my first long-term gig, finishing out the last ten weeks of the school year. Nothing about the assignment was ideal, but I kept deferring to colleagues who were wiser than I. If I only had the list - plan, prepare, and engage was the first item, followed by proximity control, and assigning seats. Sound simple, but the article contains some good advice beyond the basics. Like using a remote mouse to allow getting into the room, and assigning seats, but without remorse. These are things we try every day, but with a few hints to make them more effective.
