This 5E lesson guides 5th graders in the use of homemade indicators to classify substances as acids or bases. The activity provided gives students experience using qualitative and macroscopic aspects of science. A foundation is created for chemistry at the same time students engage in an inquiry-based activity.

This article describes a 5E inquiry lesson in which students learn about acids and bases. Using common household items, such as red cabbage juice, as indicators, students engage in experiments to determine the pH of liquids. The authors of this article do an excellent job of detailing each part the 5E sequence. They also offer practical and simple ways to demonstrate concepts. For instance, the authors suggest using packets of kool-aid to help students understand the concept of concentration. I look forward to trying this lesson out in my classroom, soon!
