The author of this article spent three summers doing research with real scientists through a program called RET. (Research Experience for Teachers) During this time the teacher not only learned a great deal of science through that experience but he also learned that he could do real research. Using this experience he tried to bring it to his high school students. He created research situations for students at various facilities and students engaged in peer review of other students. Having participated in a similar experience I feel this is an important step in creating students more interested and involved with scientific careers.

Although this article is a little dated, it provides great incentive for exploring some of the many RET opportunities (research experiences for teachers) that exist nationally. The author describes his many experiences and how they have impacted his classroom. Trying searching "RET", since the website included in the article does not work.
