This article explains how a school in Maine has done significant work to try to save the salmon in their region. For a decade the students participated in the “Salmon in the Schools Program” sponsored by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Each year students raised 300 river-specific salmon and released them into a nearby river. They also conducted water quality tests of the river as they collaborated with their local watershed councils and federal governmental agencies. As a result of their efforts they were nationally recognized and were invited to speak at many different organizations’ meetings. Although the students’ efforts did not succeed in restoring salmon populations, the learning experiences for the students was worth the time and effort exerted. This is an outstanding example of how local, state, and federal agencies can come together to enhance student learning and empower students to take action in their communities.

Fifth grade students are paired up with high school student teams to include then in a research project involved in a salmon restoration project in Washington State. Older students get to share what they had learned over a year to the students who get to partially participate in a research endeavor to restock the salmon in that area. This approach provides younger students with what science is all about.
