What is the 5R method of instruction? The R’s stand for the following words: Reveal, Replace, Reposition, Repeat and Reload. Through doing a scientific inquiry lessons new words are revealed. They begin to replace everyday words. To reposition is to use the new academic word into a form that is more like “talking science”. Pedagogy suggests that the repetition of new words multiple times helps model pronunciation as well as use of the word. Using the new word to reload the lesson the next day is also important. These 5 R’s are ways to help ELL learners develop language skills and usage within each science inquiry activity.

This article approaches an authentic science problem through the lens of vocabulary development. Fourth and fifth grade ELL students engaged in a study of erosion through the use of a teaching strategy called the 5R Instructional Model. The FOSS kit “Landforms” was part of a 12-day study of erosion, so one should determine whether the needed science equipment and materials (like a stream table) are readily available in his/her school beforehand. The teaching strategies explained in the article can be transferred to other science lessons where vocabulary terms add to the confusion of understanding key science concepts. Learning vocabulary can take on a life of its own. Using specific instructional strategies that are meant to help students understand new terms and use them correctly will help all learners. A chart that explains the 5R Instructional Model is included.
