This article compares an ineffective, frustrating, and traditional mineral identification lab with a more engaging, satisfying inquiry-based series of lessons that helps middle school students understand the work of geologists and helps them learn about the properties that different minerals exhibit. The teacher begins by involving the students in the preparation of their mineral identification kits. As one reads through the article, he/she will learn how to set up the activities, how to encourage collaborative group work, and how to help students engage in the same kinds of work that are done by field geologists.
