As a science teacher teaching high school in a high desert, groundwater is an essential resource for our small community. As a teacher, I have organized a project-based research activities for my students [with help from a Geology professor from PSU] in helping the USGS with their current study in our area. Helping students and their parents to understand the importance of this topic is necessary.

As a former groundwater hydrologist, I am amazed at the number of students and their teachers who believe that water moves underground in "rivers", and around here, the misconception is that it comes from Canada. The reality is that groundwater is one of the emerging battlegrounds, important not only for environmental health, but central to civilization as well. This article is a good starting point for the uninitiated with little understanding of water supply.
