Children learn about waste and recycling in this two week project where third graders become engineers in a program that would take four hours each day. The program ‘Wise about Waste’ was developed from the Minnesota Science Museum and can be downloaded from the website provided. The assessment rubric is provided in this article. The program is also intended to reach out to the families of these children as well.

This article discusses a hands-on learning experience for third grade students. Students apply what they have learned about recycled and reusable materials to create robots. This lesson allowed students to also have their parents involved as students brought reusable items from home. Through this experiment students were able to work like engineers and use their critical thinking skills.

This article introduces an innovative lesson that integrates art, recycling, and an introduction to robotics. While the lesson presented in this article is intriguing, I think I would extend the lesson by incorporating a system like LEGO NXT into the robot sculptures so students can also learn about computer programming. Overall, this is an excellent article that is full of great ideas for an elementary science classroom.

The article provides a variety of activities for students to participate in to raise their awareness of recycling. Through the activities, students were able to make connections between the stewardship of the environment in their own lives. Part of the success of the curriculum was the involvement of the families at home.
