Model building is very important for students to understand how cell processes occur. I like this activity because it is simple, inexpensive, and can be adapted to a variety of learning abilities. I plan on using this when my students study DNA structure and replication, RNA transcription, and protein synthesis.

This article describes how pipe cleaners (craft store variety) can be used to explore DNA activities such as replication, mutation and protein synthesis. This obviously requires simple materials easily available and when the activity is finished these models can then be used to display them in your classroom. The photos help visualize the product and all the instructions are provided. This looks like a fun, simple activity that could be applied to middle school students and upward.
