The author of this article strongly feels that as an educator far too many students do not meet many professionals with science related careers other than their doctors or dentists. She further advocates that as an educator one needs to reach out to the community to provide for your students live speakers into the classroom. This can bring to life the applications of science and engineering in a new way beyond textbooks and traditional activities. If one provides these experiences, especially in nontraditional science roles, you can challenge a student’s views of their own communities and possible opportunities for their own lives.
NSTA Press produces classroom-ready activities, hands-on approaches to inquiry, relevant professional development, the latest scientific education news and research, assessment and standards-based instruction.
