Insects can be useful for investigations because they are numerous, relatively easy to find, and fascinating to students. Most elementary students have limited understandings of what exactly becomes of insects during the winter, often guessing that insects must “go to sleep” or “they just die.” In this winter activity, students learn about insect adaptations for winter survival. Afterwards, they venture outdoors—sometimes on snowshoes—to search for insects. Students make observations about the insects and collect data. Suggestions are given for possible extensions of this winter ecology investigation.
