The author of this article looks at three curriculum attempts to integrate science and reading to see how they are programs different, what they have in common, how they suggest teachers to start, and problems with integrated programs. As a secondary teacher not trained in the area of reading this article was extremely helpful to me and it might be helpful to other science content educators.

The author discusses three integrated reading and science programs he labels as: The Guthrie Program; The Romance/Vitale Program; and The McMahon Program. Each is named after the researchers who created them based on their research studies. The article describes the commonalities between the three programs and the reasons why we should integrate science and reading. This is an informational article if you are looking for the research studies that support integrating reading with science. All of the programs facilitated students’ reading development and increased their science knowledge and understanding of key concepts. All three studies integrated writing as well.
