This article shows how to use learning centers to accommodate ELLs and differentiate instruction for all learners. The activities included in the article incorporate content teaching strategies and assessment techniques that are appropriate for both ELLs and native English speakers. The authors believed that the non-threatening aspect of a learning center would cause students to spend more time working with their peers on academic tasks and help lower their inhibitions, engage them intellectually and emotionally, expose them to the target language, and enhance their academic performances. The authors have included a useful rubric to assist teachers as to when and how to set up learning centers. They also discuss important considerations when setting up a learning center to help make it more effective. This article’s an excellent source for information for any teacher teaching classes in which students speak multiple languages.
