This informative article describes two books that are about the water cycle. Both are classics that have been read many times to children. The most interesting thing I found in the article was the idea of students drawing their own water cycle diagram after reading “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats. Teachers usually show students diagrams of the water cycle when starting a unit on the water cycle. Having students draw their own idea of the water cycle first is a great formative assessment!! The article goes on to describe some other easy to do activities with the water cycle.

Both of the activities described here tied to trade books provided do a nice job of introducing students to the water cycle. However both activities lack assessment suggestions. Still, both activities, as described have interesting engagement and exploration activities that students should enjoy. The upper elementary activity can be modified to make it more inquiry and the extensions also. The upper elementary activities could also be used in Middle School - the terrarium and the extensions especially.
