After a unit on mitosis students learn how the process can become a problem and generate cancers. Students look at the different types of cancer. They then do research to learn more about a particular type of cancer by following a checklist provided in this article. From there they then complete a Cancer Research Note-Taking Template also provided in this article. Finally they present their research to other students in the class. A rubric is provided for that as well. There is high interest in the topic and knowledge spills over to the families as well. This is yet another example of connections between what is learned in the classroom to real life experiences.

Using real life examples in the classroom is vital in student understanding and application of knowledge. Cancer is a perfect example of a cell cycle that is out of balance. In this activity, students research a particular type of cancer. They then create a brochure that will help someone with cancer better understand the disease. A research checklist, note-taking template, and scoring rubric are included, as well as several age appropriate web resources.
